We’re on winter sabbatical Dec 1–Feb 15. All our work is powered by the unpaid labor of Black women, many of whom live with the weight of multiple oppressions. Rest is part of our strategy for sustainability and liberation. Responses will be delayed. Community members in need will hear back as soon as we’re able. HFW Session 6: The Rise of Jim Crow – Containment and Control

About the event
After Reconstruction was overthrown, white supremacy reinvented itself. The rise of Jim Crow marked a new era of control — one enforced through segregation, criminalization, and the myth of “separate but equal.”
In this session, we’ll explore how the systems of power created during slavery and Reconstruction evolved into laws, institutions, and cultural norms designed to contain Black freedom. We’ll trace the connections between the 1800s and today — from segregation to mass incarceration, from lynch mobs to policing, from “Black codes” to “law and order.”
We’ll also lift up the ways our people continued to build, organize, and thrive through it all.
