Reclaiming Black Housing: Cooperative Solutions for Our Community

Housing is more than just a place to live—it’s the foundation for stability, community, and self-determination. Our Black-led housing initiatives focus on cooperative ownership, environmental justice, and long-term affordability, ensuring that Black communities in New England have access to secure and sustainable housing. Cooperation has always been part of our traditions, from mutual aid societies to Black-led housing cooperatives like the Dunbar Apartments in Harlem and The New Communities Land Trust in Georgia. We are reclaiming this legacy to create solutions that truly serve our people. Interested in joining us? Our Vision for Black-Led Housing in New England

We envision a future where Black communities in New Hampshire and nearby states have access to stable, affordable, and self-determined housing. Rooted in cooperative ownership and environmental justice, our approach is about more than just securing housing—it’s about building a community-driven model that prioritizes collective care, sustainability, and economic empowerment.

By reclaiming our ancestral cooperative practices, we are working toward housing solutions that:

  • Keep housing affordable through shared ownership and cooperative governance.

  • Support those most impacted by housing insecurity, including low-income families and formerly houseless individuals.

  • Promote environmental justice by ensuring safe, healthy, and sustainable housing.

  • Build long-term Black wealth by shifting housing from an extractive system to a collective asset.

This vision is about creating housing that works for us—by us. Through education, community engagement, and strategic partnerships, we are laying the groundwork for Black-led housing cooperatives that will serve generations to come.
